Myths about Home Insulation You Probably Believe

There is currently a scheme called the Energy Company Obligation that helps homes without the means to install wall cavity insulation and other forms of insulation.

Old Junk Provides Effective Loft Insulation : Some people believe they can retain the heat pumped out by their electric heating boiler by having a lot of rubbish sitting in their loft. This is a myth. Possessions do not act as a good layer of insulation. In fact, having many items sitting in your loft on top of your insulation is a bad idea all round.

Loft insulation works by trapping tiny pockets of air. If you have something heavy sitting on top, this air is going to be squeezed out, thus reducing the effectiveness of the insulation.

Double-Glazing is the most Cost-Effective Way of Trapping Heat : Although double-glazing is far more effective at retaining heat than single glazing, most heat is not lost through the windows. Experts predict only about 10% of heat is lost through the windows. The rest of it is lost through the walls and the roof. You would be better off investing in loft and wall cavity insulation if you want to see a significant drop in your heating bills.

The same principle applies to the less common triple glazing. Unless you have a gap between the window frame and the wall that is creating a draught, you will not be losing a lot of heat through your windows anyway.

Electric Heaters vs Oil Heaters - What are the Key Differences

Your Guide to Thawing a Condensate Pipe on a Frozen Boiler

A frozen boiler is a big danger posed by winter in the UK. The problem is thatwe are never quite sure in the UK whether we are going to have a cold or a mild winter, so we never prepare for them. The biggest problem is the condensate pipe. If your boiler freezes, this tends to be the heart of the problem. A blocked condensate pipe can leave you without any heat at all.

Electrical Heating Supplies always recommends finding a professional engineer to help you with this. Thawing the pipe yourself can lead to cracking and splintering, which is far more expensive to repair. If you feel you can do it yourself, you do it at your own risk.

What is the Condensate Pipe? : Let us begin by discussing what part of a heater the condensate pipe is. Most modern electric heaters have this pipe, which helps transport water away from the boiler itself. The boiler takes away the energy from the flue gasses to increase efficiency. This waste gas cools and leaves some acidic water behind. The condensate pipe is responsible for taking this acidic water to the drain.

You have to check that your boiler actually has one of these pipes. Not all modern electric boilers have them. These pipes are about 2cm wide, white, and plastic. If the rest of the pipes are metal, this is almost certainly the condensate pipe.

As a final check, see if the pipe runs into the drain. If it does, you have a condensate pipe.

Why Does the Condensate Pipe Freeze? : Simple! It is the only part of the boiler outside your home. It cannot drain the water without exposing itself to the outside elements. Acidic water is prone to freezing. When it freezes, the pipe is blocked because the water from the boiler continues to be sent down the pipe. Luckily, modern boilers have a special automatic switch to turn everything off to prevent the entire system becoming flooded.

How Do You Thaw the Pipe? : You have two possible ways of thawing the pipe. To start with, you can get some hot water and apply it to the outside of the pipe. The water should never be boiling or it can cause the material to crack. Warm water works best. Drop the water across the frozen section slowly and deliberately.
Another option is to use a heat wrap or hot water bottle. Wrap it around the pipe and hold it. The water should begin to flow again.

If you do not feel confident in your ability to do this, call a professional. The treatment sounds simple, but it is easy to go wrong. If the water is slightly too hot, you could damage the pipe beyond repair. Always start with lukewarm water and work your way upwards.

Overall, you cannot do much about this problem. It is impossible to prevent completely because the pipe is exposed to the cold air. Thankfully, UK winters are not as long as they used to be. They can often unfreeze themselves as quickly as they freeze themselves, so it is not a problem to fret over.

The Problem with Storage Heaters

If you currently have storage heaters installed in your home, it is probably time to think about replacing them with modern electric heaters. Storage heaters, while at one time useful for homes with no direct access to gas, are simply too ugly, bulky and expensive to warrant in place in 21st century homes. Aesthetics and size are two of the main reasons given by people looking to upgrade to state-of-the-art electric heating. However, the main grievances with storage heaters centre on running costs. 


The Economy 7 Tariff

The Economy 7 tariff is the whole reason storage heaters became popular in the first place and it was first introduced in the 1970s as a way to provide homeowners with cheaper electricity. The tariff works by providing cheaper ‘off-peak’ rate electricity during the night (typically between the hours of 10 pm and 8:30 am). Storage heaters can then be used to utilise this tariff by charging overnight when electricity is cheaper and emitting heat through the day.

The problem with this tariff (besides it not being as cheap as it seems due to disproportionately high daytime tariffs) is that it makes lights and appliances such as the fridge, cooker, and television, more expensive to run, meaning you don’t really save any money at all.

Lack of Control

Modern heaters, like electric boilers, have thermostat controls that allow you to set the temperature to suit your needs – storage heaters do not have this same level of control. Getting the right heat with storage heaters relies on you being able to predict the weather for the next day – an almost impossible task.
In addition to this, storage heaters charge during the night when everyone’s in bed and emit heat during the day when everyone’s at work!

Inconsistent

Storage heaters tend to draw a lot of power in building up the surplus heat energy they need for a sustained output. However, heat is often quick to ‘leak’ without benefiting an entire room and once they’re out of heat you need to top-up, which you can’t do until night time. Some heaters do feature a ‘boost’ feature, but this is inconsistent at best.

Modern electric heaters from EHS are able to reach full temperature in just 30 minutes, after which a 10-minute charge provides around 40 minutes of heat. Better than this though, is the fact that they do not have to be charged up at all – you simply switch them on whenever you need heat.
